After Donald Trump announced a series of deaths related to electronic cigarettes, it announced the ban on the sale of flavor electronic cigarettes.
So, how much money is spent on e-cigarettes and how safe is it?
1. E-cigarettes are becoming more and more popular
According to the World Health Organization, the estimated number of smokers worldwide has decreased slightly but steadily, just over 1 billion.
But it's a different story.
The number of e-cigarettes has been growing rapidly - from about 7 million in 2011 to 41 million in 2018.
Euromonitor, a market research firm, estimates that nearly 55 million adults will use e-cigarettes by 2021.
2. E-cigarette consumption is increasing
With the increasing number of e-cigarettes, the e-cigarette market is expanding.
It is estimated that the global market is worth US $19.3 billion (15.5 billion pounds), up from US $6.9 billion (5.5 billion pounds) five years ago.
The United States, Britain and France are the biggest markets. In 2018, vapers in these three countries spent more than $10 billion (8 billion pounds) on smokeless tobacco and aerosol products.
The White House recently announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will finalize a plan to stop selling all non tobacco flavors in the world's largest e-cigarette market.
Prior to that, six deaths and 450 reported cases of lung disease were associated with aerosolization in 33 states of the United States.
3. Open e-cigarettes are the most popular
There are two main types of e-cigarettes - open and closed systems, also known as open and closed water tanks.
In open systems, vaporized liquid can be refilled manually by the user. There is also a movable cigarette holder.
The sealed e-cigarette uses a ready-made refill, which is directly screwed onto the battery of the e-cigarette.
It is estimated that vapers will spend an estimated US $10 billion (8 billion pounds) on closed system e-cigarettes this year, surpassing that of open system e-cigarettes for the first time.
4. Most e-cigarettes are purchased in stores or online shopping malls
According to a report released by Ernst & Young in 2016, most e-cigarette users buy equipment in exclusive stores or online shopping malls.
It is believed that consumers may make their first e-cigarette purchase in person to familiarize themselves with relatively new products or seek advice on which type of device is best for them.
Vaping stores are becoming more common in the UK, with 69 new stores on high street in the first half of 2019 alone.
Another Kantar survey of 3000 users by Ernst & Young showed that 21% of users bought their devices online.
5. Is e-cigarette safe?
In the United States, where deaths and lung disease are reported, Michigan has become the first state to ban flavored e-cigarettes. The average age of those affected was 19 years old.
But doctors, public health experts and cancer charities in the UK all agree that, based on the current evidence, e-cigarettes carry little cigarette risk.
An independent review concluded that e-cigarettes are about 95% less harmful than cigarettes. Professor Ann McNeill, who wrote the review, said: "e-cigarettes may change public health."
Compared with other countries / regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom has more stringent regulations on the content of e-cigarette pens. For example, there is a cap on nicotine content, which is not available in the United States.
However, although the content of e-cigarettes is much lower, e-cigarettes may still contain some potentially harmful chemicals found in cigarette smoke.
